上周一則令筆者關注的新聞是有女童疑遭虐待後死亡。據報道，法庭聆訊時控方指女童曾被多次拋到半空，頭部因而撞到天花，另又被剪刀刺胸口。

　　有報章以 "Abused girl, 5, hit ceiling after being hurled in the air and was poked with scissors." 為報道文章的標題。

　　"hurl" 有用力推或扔的意思，在上述情況 "hurled in the air" 筆者譯作被拋至半空。

　　此外，上周發生了一宗懷疑虐狗事件，一名56歲的女士被捕。有關新聞報道稱，警方初步調查後懷疑她將狗隻、衣物及膠袋等物件扔出窗外。報章用 "Initial investigations show the dog was among items such as clothes and plastic bags suspected to have been hurled from building, police source says." 狗隻於一樓平台被發現時經已死亡。

　　去年十一月印尼峇里東北部有火山持續噴出火山灰，疑似即將出現更大規模爆發，島上居民的生活受到影響，於「危險區域」居住的人需要疏散（"As the volcano continues to hurl ash skywards and shows signs of an imminent bigger eruption, life in many parts of the island have been affected. Those who live within the 'danger zone' were ordered to evacuate."）。

　　去年12月，美國總統單方面承認耶路撒冷為以色列首都，引發強烈反應。12月中巴勒斯坦青年跟以軍於西岸城市伯利恆發生衝突，巴勒斯坦青年向以軍投擲石頭，以軍則以橡膠子彈和催淚氣體還擊（"Palestinian youths clashed in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, hurling stones toward Israeli soldiers, who fired back with rubber bullets and tear gas."）。

　　虐待人或動物都不可接受，除要懲罰犯案者，也要找出防止或及早發現疑似個案的方法，以減少同類事件發生。
