撰文之時，筆者正從報章得知中環發生搶劫珠寶案，涉案人數三人。根據報道，他們以鐵槌打破珠寶店櫥窗，搶走珠寶，其中一名疑犯於案發現場附近被捕，其餘兩人則在準備離境時於邊境被捕。（'One suspect arrested near scene after gang smashes store windows with hammer, remaining two caught at Shenzhen border.'）

　　 'smash'於上文可以解作打破，擊破或打碎。而上述報道文章的標題則用了'All three suspects caught after HKD40 million smash-and-grab raid at Hong Kong jewellery shop'。'smash-and-grab raid'所指的是砸櫥窗搶劫。

　　 有時候交通意外也會用上'smash'這字，而通常會用'smash into'。二月底，泰國東北部發生交通意外，一輛雙層旅遊巴撞向一棵樹，造成最少18人死亡（'At least 18 were killed in northeastern Thailand after double decker tour bus smashed into a tree.'）

　　另外，'smash'也可以解作打垮或摧毀。上月中，警方搗破一個由三合會操控的賣淫集團，七十五人被捕。報道以'75 arrested as Hong Kong police smash triad-run prostitution syndicate'為標題。

　　　　　　　　筆者會留意那三位持護照以遊客身份入境犯案的人會在定罪後受到什麼懲罰。
