Derive from (phrasal verb)

●To obtain or receive something from some source.

(從…得到,來源於…)

Examples:  

1.I derive great pleasure from listening to music.  

2.The word "peninsula" derives from the Latin words for "almost" and "island."

What crimes are committed in thy name!

●多少罪惡假汝之名而行。原話出自法國大革命時期著名政治家羅蘭夫人(Madame Roland,1754-1793)。1793年她被控為保皇派的同情者並被不公正地判處死刑。臨刑前,她在斷頭台上向着革命廣場(la Place de la Revolution)上的自由雕像鞠躬並留下了一句為後人廣為傳誦的名言:O liberty! O liberty! What crimes are committed in thy name!(自由啊自由,天下古今多少罪惡假汝之名而行!)。英文中的thy是your(你的)的古體字。

Examples:  

1.The beating took place while a policeman looked on.  

2.While the kittens played, the mother cat looked on contentedly.

Benighted (adj.)

●Without knowledge or morals.(愚昧的,無知的)

Examples:  

1.Some of the early explorers thought of the local people as benighted savages who could be exploited.  

2.They saw themselves as bringers of culture to poor benighted peoples.

Lay bare sth (idiom)

●To make something known. (戳穿,道破,揭露)

Examples:  

1.It's been promoted as the biography that lays bare the truth behind the legend.  

2.The trial was the first to lay bare the secrets of the organization.
