申訴專員公署早前發表報告，指本港圖書館在過去六年棄掉或回收了逾350萬館藏資料，卻沒記錄棄掉資料的理由或分析有關資料的性質。

　　有報章評論指，圖書館當要定期處理掉已損毀或過時的館藏資料，但必要以審慎和負責任的方式來處理（'Libraries do need to get rid of damaged or obsolete materials regularly, but it is important that it is done in a judicious and accountable way.'）

　　'obsolete'可指過時，也可解作淘汰或退化。上月一新電話型號面世，筆者雖並非該品牌的支持者，但也從有關報道得知電話的嶄新面容識別功能。有人認為這個品牌再一次創新，而新功能又能被廣泛使用，淘汰其他功能（'It has pushed through innovations and made them widespread while turning others obsolete.'）。

　　談及'obsolete'，筆者想談談'planned obsolescence'（計劃報廢）。撰文之時，筆者剛收看了一個以計劃報廢為題的節目，探討這種有意限定產品使用期限的商業策略。有人認為這種計劃報廢並不是單純的剝削，它其實也令製造者和消費者同時受惠（'Planned obsolescence is not nakedly exploitative, it benefits both consumers and manufacturers.'）。不知大家是否同意這看法？
