The dead of night (phrase)

●The quietest, darkest part of the night.(深夜)

Examples:  

1.The fire broke out in the dead of night.  

2.I woke up at the dead of night

Pretext (noun)

●A pretended reason for doing something that is used to hide the real reason.(藉口,託詞)

Examples:  

1.The border dispute was used as a pretext for military intervention.  

2.I called her on the pretext of needing more information.

Flout (verb)

●To intentionally not obey a rule, law, or custom.

(公然蔑視、違背)

Examples:  

1.The contractors in turn flout all labour laws and do not even pay minimum wages.  

2.The orchestra decided to flout convention/tradition, and wear their everyday clothes for the concert.

On the verge (of sth/doing sth) (idiom)

●If you are on the verge of something or come to the verge of something, you are very close to experiencing it.(接近於…,瀕臨…)

Examples:  

1.The two countries were on the verge of war.  

2.He was on the verge of making a comment but stopped, realizing it would be a mistake.

On the spot (idiom)

●At exactly the right place; at exactly the right time.(現場,當時當地)

Examples:  

1.It's noon, and I'm glad you're all here on the spot.

2.He was arrested on the spot.
