Two men, Chan Yiu-shing and Cheng Wai-shing, arrested for possession of hot pepper spray during the anti-parallel-trading campaign in Yuen Long last year, were convicted by the Tuen Mun Magistracy for "having offensive weapons with them in a public place"and jailed for six and nine months respectively.
On the surface this case seems not very serious in nature, but in reality the two convicted both belong to an extremely radical group and were involved in a "big case" uncovered during the Occupy Central for possessing a large amount of explosives, which is very serious and will be tried in February of next year.
The so-called National Independent Party involved in the "Ho Chung Case" once proclaimed on the Internet last year that Hong Kong was "a country that can become independent", and its aim was to "strive for Hong Kong independence" and "to achieve the maximum effects with minimal resources". In June of last year, the police raided an "ammunition depot" in an abandoned ATV film studios in Ho Chung in Sai Kung on a tip-off and uncovered a large amount of explosives and ingredients for making explosives on the spot. Ten men and women including Chan Yiu-shing and Cheng Wai-shing were arrested, who then were brought before the Kwun Tong Magistracy in the same month.
As legal proceedings are in progress regarding the case of the "ammunition depot" uncovered in former ATV film studios in Ho Chung in Sai Kung, no comment must be made in accordance with the law. Nevertheless, as the National Independent Party and other pro-Hong Kong independent organisations are concerend, the threat and danger directed against Hong Kong society by their radical words and deeds and being prone to violence must never be underestimated and treated lightly.
Right now, a tough fact that must be faced up to is: "Hong Kong independence" has become inseparably linked with violence in countless ways; wherever there is "Hong Kong independence" there is violence, and wherever there is violence there is danger. This is almost a one hundred per cent sure thing.
Why is it that wherever there is "Hong Kong independence" there is violence? So much so that the two could be equated? This is based on facts.
As a matter of fact, so-called "Hong Kong independence" itself has no historical, cultural or legal grounds, and absolutely infeasible in reality. Viewed in whichever way, it cannot but be a blind alley with no way out. Those who propose the fallacy of "Hong Kong independence" are mostly radical young people. They lack knowledge about the histories and cultures of the nation and Hong Kong itself, and have no clear recognition of their own identity. In addition, some of them have failed to achieve their goals in their career development. Hence, the extremist and radical advocate of so-called "Hong Kong independence" become their "Utopia" and "stimulant", leading them to think that as long as they are "brave and fierce" enough more young people would be lured to join them and achieve their goal. They cannot justify themselves in theory, so the only way for them to attract public attention is to resort to violence.
So the saying that "Hong Kong independence" is equal to violence is by no means an exaggeration. Violent assaults happening since the Occupy Central are evidence of this. A small number of extremely radical "Hong Kong independence" activists are particularly prone to violence, including to making explosives and bombs. So much so that not only traditional pro-democratic parties try their best to keep a distance, even some "localist" groups can't stomach them anymore and have drawn a demarcation line and cut connection with them.
In fact, the points of view on the issue of "Hong Kong independence" put forward by Chairman Zhang Dejiang of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) during his earlier inspection tour in Hong Kong - that "Hong Kong independence" violates the Basic Law; that "Hong Kong independence" won't get anywhere; that "Hong Kong independence" is a misfortune instead of a fortune [for Hong Kong]; and that Hong Kong people "have their answers in mind" - must become Hong Kong society's fundamental attitude toward "Hong Kong independence" and awareness of its curse. The court sentencing two radical violent elements to imprisonment yesterday is in accord with the spirit of the rule of law and the fundamental interests of Hong Kong society. 09 June 2016
