By making surprise arrest [of Meng Wanzhou], the U.S. fully shows its true colo

At the same time when the two heads of state from China and the United States were having dinner together to bring the first signs of dawn in cooling down the Sino-US trade war, Ms. Meng Wanzhou, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of China's Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd, was detained when she was transferring flights at the Vancouver airport in Canada. The Canadian side said it took the action on behalf of the U.S., which was seeking for her extradition. The Chinese government has made solemn representations to Canada and the US, demanding that both parties immediately clarify the reasons for the detention, and immediately release the detainee.

The occurrence of such an incident is shocking and extremely outrageous. Both the United States and Canada claim to be free and democratic countries with the rule of law and human rights. Yet this time they have gone so far as to use such a terrible means of surprise attack against a responsible figure of a known world-class enterprise, taking her away from the airport. This really makes one bristle with anger. Huawei has a company legally registered and operating in the U.S., and its responsible figures including Ms. Meng Wanzhou have attended various public functions in the U.S. If the U.S. side had any suspicion about the company or Ms. Meng herself, it could have knocked at the company's door to conduct investigation, taking actions in an aboveboard and straightforward way. How come it had to take her away in a surprise move like dealing with a terrorist, and had to do this via another country's territory? What the hell is its purpose by doing this in a way of making an empty show and kicking up a cloud of dust? Does it want to show that the U.S. power is far-reaching, or to make others be taunted at the sight of it and bow to its power?

It's a shame, however, that what people see behind such bullying behavior is neither the demeanor of a big nation nor the majestic looking of a strong power, but a rogue's hideous features and a blackguard's way of domineering and doing whatever he wants to do.

Moreover, exactly at the time when Ms. Meng Wanzhou was detained all of a sudden at the Vancouver airport, U.S. President Donald Trump was meeting and having dinner together with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Argentina. At that time, Trump was shaking hands and having pictures taken with President Xi and patting on his shoulders as if with an old friend, but giving a stab in the back behind all his smiles. Even a three-year-old kid won't believe that Trump knew nothing about the detention beforehand. It may well be asked: Does the imposing America still have integrity and righteousness per se, given its behaviour of saying one thing but doing another, acting one way in the open and another way in secret, keeping daggers hidden behind smiles, and hitting others below the belt? Isn't such a way of wanting to win all for U.S. itself and to benefit itself at others' expense the most illuminating footnote to Trump's "America First"?

As a matter of fact, Huawei as a leading enterprise in China's telecom technology has relied on its own to keep developing and growing since it was set up in 1987. Today, Huawei is No 1 in global telecom equipment market share and No 2 in global mobile phone sales, and leads its competitive rivals in 5G telecom technology. Because of this, it arouses hostility, suspicion and jealousy from such a super hegemon as the United States, which has over several years kept intervening in, smearing, imposing restrictions and exerting pressure on Huawei. Not long ago, it even asserted that Huawei was involved in spying activities to threaten U.S. national security. In August, Trump even signed a bill banning U.S. government and government contractors from using Huawei products. It has been widely anticipated that following the incident centering on Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment Corporation (ZTE Corp.), the U.S. was bound to deal a fatal blow to Huawei.

Facts are before our eyes, by stating a trade war with China and hunting down ZTE and Huawei one after another, the U.S. - apart from grabbing money and interests - is extending its devilish talons into China's economic system with an ultimate aim to curb China's development and change its colour, so as to turn an independent, self-reliant China into what Trump said an "obedient China".

The U.S. government ordering the Canadian police to detain Meng Wanzhou is a malicious incident of seriously violating human rights and freedom. The Chinese government has made solemn representations demanded the immediate release of the detainee. The United States will come to no good by throwing its weight around and acting unrighteously. 07 December 2018
