正當大家很期待下一次公眾假期（即聖誕節）的來臨，颱風海馬十天前襲港，為大部分人帶來了一天額外的假期。

　　當海馬正迫近香港時，天氣報道指熱帶氣旋海馬緩慢移動至香港800公里範圍以內，或有需要改掛三號強風信號（Tropical Cyclone Haima edged within 800km of the city with the possibility of the more serious strong wind signal No. 3 expected to be issued.）

　　「edge」於上文為動詞用，解作慢慢移動、逐步移向。

　　根據韓國海關部門的數據，韓國10月份首20天的出口數字有所上升，較去年同期增長1.2%（According to the Korea Customs Service, South Korea's exports edged up for the first 20 days of October─up 1.2 per cent from the same period of last year.）。「edged up」就有緩慢上升的意思。據報，出口上升是船務出口的短暫反彈所帶動。

　　「edge」作名詞用，很常見的解釋是邊緣。筆者今天多提及一個用法，「edge」同時也有優勢的意思。

　　同樣是10月的數據，中國大陸今年10．1黃金周的電影票房首次錄得下跌。多年來，黃金周上映的電影都大賣，但今年國慶假期則優勢漸漸消失（For years a Golden Week was a time to celebrate a box-office bonanza, but this year's National Day holiday is seeing its edge fade.）。「edge」於上文就解作優勢。

　　新加坡航空於上周正式再次推出新加坡至三藩市的直航機。有分析指該航空公司於2013年決定停止所有直航至美國的航班後，令其他亞洲區內的機場在美亞航班中佔優（Analysts noted that SIA's pullout in 2013 gave other airports in the region an edge when it comes to Asia-US air links.）。今天航空公司的決定勢將改變區內的航空業形勢，其他機場是否能保住優勢？然而，對喜歡直航的搭客來說，這絕對是一個好消息。
