So-called Elite team touts for "independence" in Britain just to expose their o

Benny Tai Yiu-ting, Martin Lee Chu-ming and others have been running hither and thither in England for some days, trying to tout for "independence for Hong Kong" and beg for support. But they have been given a cold shoulder. Apart from a couple of has-been politicians, no decent-ranking official has met them. They end up in a disgraceful fiasco of being snubbed.

In fact, this trip to England by Benny Tai and his fellows was carefully planned and calculated beforehand - from speech topics, composition of the team to even the agenda, to make it sure that "a powerful charge" be delivered to produce a "sensational effect". Among others, the team leader Benny Tai is dizzy with the "victory" since plotting the 79-day illegal Occupy Central and boasts that he has successfully introduced into Hong Kong the Western "philosophy of defiance" such as "occupation" and "vote allocation" in an election to upgrade the "movement of democratic defiance" in the SAR to an "international level". As such he presents himself as a "guide light" with his arrogance running out of control. Hence he naturally appeared as the "leader" during this trip to England. But such a "big mouth" as Benny Tai is only slightly known in the academic circle but unknown to British politicians in and out of government. As a result, "old veteran" Martin Lee still had to contribute his remaining energy, being taken in to act as a "living signboard" and lead the way to introduce and meet some people.

As the aim of the trip by Benny Tai and the others was to seek foreign support for "independence for Hong Kong", it would have been more "persuasive" by taking in some youngsters' organisation seeking "self-determination" or "independence for Hong Kong". The just-outlawed Hong Kong National Party should have been the "best candidate", but that Andy Chan Ho-tin, barely cultured, is like "the mud that does not hold the wall". His speech at the FCC (Foreign Correspondents' Club) the other day was viewed as being "very short on specifics". Interviewed by the Time, he was ridiculed for being unable "to describe the roadmap" and "offering no picture", and the author of the report concluded that "independence for Hong Kong" led by such a youngster could never be succeeded. "In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king", so Nathan Law Kwun-chung was recruited at short notice to replace Andy Chan, in the hope of impressing British politicians with a young person with "ideals". But the advocate for "independence for Hong Kong" in itself cannot stand a single blow, being unable to justify itself, so Nathan Law failed to say anything substantial, apart from complaining about Britain remaining silent about Hong Kong National Party being barred.

In the event, Joseph Lian Yi-zhen, a so-called "political commentator", became the "gunner" responsible for "theoretically" advocating the "necessity" and "rationality" of "independence for Hong Kong". At a meeting he proposed a "great theory" of "Hong Kong's Cultural Independence from China" to stress on the idea of strengthening Hong Kong's cultural "separation from" China because "cultural independence" violated no law so it was "safe" and "feasible", so much as that in future "such an ‘independence for Hong Kong' idea as cultural independence should be strengthened," and so on and so forth.

Joseph Lian boasts himself to have a thorough knowledge of both Western and Chinese learnings and be well versed in classics and history. He frequently publishes long articles of thousands of characters on Apple Daily to talk about "the post-war intellectual history of relations between China and Hong Kong". In his view, the ideas of New Asia College's Chin Mu and others years ago and of Ming Pao Monthly's Louis Cha Leung-yung are all "outdated", and only the Economic Journal, of which he used to be editor-in-chief, and its sister publications become a new force coming to the fore in China studies to "proactively introduce in on the newspaper knowledge and trends of thought in advanced Japanese and Western cultures, and use them to analyse China." He nonsensically says that "the evil of the Communist Party of China lies in that it inherits and brings into play the evil of feudal Chinese culture," and even uses the so-called "scorpion-crossing-river" story to uglify and slander the Communist Party of China as "eating its words", "irrational" and "true evil".

Such an anti-China trouble-making "elite team" traveled afar to Britain to tout for "independence", but they uttered words that do not hang together and stifled their conscience. As such, they really deserve the cold shoulder given by the foreigners. 05 October 2018
